Minas Gerais (MG)

The Golden Soul of Brazil.

In the high altitudes of the Southeast, where the mist clings to iron-rich mountains and the scent of wood-fired kitchens fills the air, lies the spiritual and historical heart of our nation. Minas Gerais is not simply a destination; it is a profound journey through the layers of Brazil’s identity.

A Legacy Carved in Gold and Stone

From our headquarters in the cobblestone streets of Ouro Preto, we invite you to step into an 18th-century masterpiece. This is a land of soaring Baroque cathedrals, silent monasteries, and the immortal works of Aleijadinho. Here, the "Gold Cycle" didn't just build cities; it created a refined, slow-paced way of life that remains preserved in UNESCO World Heritage sites like Tiradentes and Congonhas.

Where Heritage Meets the Avant-Garde

Minas is a land of striking contrasts. Beyond the colonial silence lies Inhotim—the world’s largest open-air contemporary art sanctuary—where monumental installations breathe alongside rare botanical collections. It is this balance between the ancient and the ultra-modern that defines the Mineiro spirit.

The Art of Hospitality

At Brasilis.Travel, we believe the true luxury of Minas lies in its intimacy. It is found in the "Cozinha Mineira"—a gastronomic heritage recently recognized by UNESCO—and in the secluded heritage pousadas that offer a level of warmth no grand hotel can replicate.

Whether you are navigating the turquoise canyons of Capitólio or tracing the diamond trails of the north, we provide the keys to a private Minas Gerais that few ever see.

🧀 The Cheese Kingdom

Minas Gerais is the heart of Brazilian comfort food. It is the birthplace of the "Pão de Queijo," a warm cheese bread made with local cured cheese and cassava flour. The traditional "Feijão Tropeiro," a mix of beans, manioc flour, sausage, and eggs, was originally created by muleteers traveling across the state. No meal is complete without a slice of Minas Cheese paired with "Goiabada" (guava paste) for dessert.

👑 Great Mineiros

Aleijadinho

Antônio Francisco Lisboa, known as Aleijadinho, was the preeminent sculptor and architect of colonial Brazil and remains the most iconic figure of the Minas Gerais Baroque era. As the son of a Portuguese architect and an enslaved African woman, his work represents a masterful fusion of European artistic traditions with a distinctly Brazilian soul, characterized by dramatic expressions and the innovative use of local soapstone. His importance to the state of Minas Gerais is immeasurable, as his genius defined the cultural and visual identity of historic cities like Ouro Preto and Congonhas, turning the region into a global center for colonial art. Even as a debilitating disease forced him to work with tools strapped to his arms, he produced masterpieces like the Twelve Prophets, which eventually earned the region recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Today, Aleijadinho is more than an artist; he is a symbol of the state's resilience and its most profound link to the wealth and complexity of the Gold Cycle history.

👑 Great Mineiros

King Pelé

Born in the heart of Minas Gerais in the city of Três Corações, Pelé is the ultimate global icon of football and a profound source of pride for his home state. Often referred to as "The King," Edson Arantes do Nascimento transformed the sport into a form of art, combining supernatural technical skill with an athletic grace that remains the gold standard for excellence. His connection to his Minas Gerais roots is immortalized in his birthplace through monuments and the "Casa Pelé," a replica of his childhood home that attracts fans from all over the world. As the only player in history to win three FIFA World Cups, he transcended the pitch to become a universal symbol of Brazilian genius and charisma. For the people of Minas Gerais, Pelé represents the state's quiet strength and its ability to produce legends that eventually conquer the entire planet

🌱 Botanical Highlights

Jabuticaba Grape

Jabuticaba is one of Brazil's most extraordinary and beloved fruits, famous for its unique habit of growing directly on the trunk and branches of the tree rather than on stems. This gives the tree a striking appearance, as if it were covered in thousands of shiny, black pearls.

Native to the Atlantic Forest and deeply synonymous with the state of Minas Gerais, the fruit has a thick, dark purple skin and a translucent, sweet, and slightly acidic white pulp. Because the fruit ferments very quickly after being picked, it is rarely exported fresh, making it a "hidden treasure" for those visiting Brazil.

Beyond being eaten fresh, it is culturally essential for making jellies, liqueurs, and wines, and a single productive tree in a backyard is often a point of pride for Brazilian families. In cities like Sabará, the fruit is so iconic that it hosts an annual festival dedicated entirely to its harvest and products.

🦜 Zoological Highlights

Tamanduá-Bandeira

The Giant Anteater, known in Brazil as the Tamanduá-bandeira, is a prehistoric-looking mammal that serves as the quintessential ambassador of the Brazilian Cerrado

Its Portuguese name refers to its magnificent, bushy tail that resembles a flowing banner or flag, which the animal uses for both temperature regulation and camouflage. This toothless wonder possesses a highly specialized anatomy, featuring a snout that houses a two-foot-long sticky tongue capable of consuming thousands of ants and termites in a single day. Despite its slow-moving and peaceful nature, it is a formidable survivor equipped with powerful front claws designed to tear through rock-hard mounds; when cornered, it famously stands on its hind legs in a defensive "embrace" that can repel even a jaguar.

Today, it remains a symbol of conservation efforts in states like Minas Gerais, where it is frequently spotted wandering the vast grasslands of Serra da Canastra National Park.

🌱 Botanical Highlights

Quaresmeira

The Quaresmeira (Pleroma granulosum) is one of the most iconic trees of the Atlantic Forest, widely celebrated as a symbol of the state of Minas Gerais and the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Its name ("Lent Tree") comes from its primary flowering season, which coincides with the Christian period of Lent (February to April), when its canopy becomes completely covered in vibrant purple or pink flowers.

Physically, it is a medium-sized tree with dark green, velvety leaves that have prominent longitudinal veins. Because of its stunning beauty, manageable size, and hardy nature, it is one of the most popular choices for urban landscaping across Brazil. To many Brazilians, the sight of a blooming Quaresmeira is the definitive visual signal that autumn is approaching.
